Lucky Ladies at the Laguna Tournament

Hey Mustangs! This season our eighth grade girls' basketball team traveled all the way to Laguna Middle School in San Luis Obispo for the Laguna Middle School Tournament. This fun filled tournament took place on February 25, 26, and 27 of 2016.

In our first game, our Orcutt lady Mustangs blew Mesa Middle School out of the water with a 41 to 22 victory. In the game, Mariah Lopez contributed 12 points along with Amanda Tonasia scoring 10 points. Julia Galloway, a great team player said, "We stepped up to the plate and played at a higher level," Coach Sal commented, "It was a great way to start the tournament!"

After winning our first game the girls came out fired up and won against St. Patrick's 33 to 21. Both Mariah Lopez and Miranda Angulo both helped lead the team to victory by both scoring 8 points each. "They were a very good team, we all played and worked together in order to get the win," said a very happy Mackenzie Kestler. "We are excited to play in the championship vs Laguna the league champions," Coach Sal said.

On a winning streak the girls never gave up and made Laguna Middle School work hard for the win but at the end Orcutt took second place. Even though Miranda Angulo contributed 10 points while Mariah Lopez contributed 6 points along with Mackenzie Kestler contributing 5, points in the end it wasn't enough to beat Laguna and lost 42 to 33. "We did really well with passing; we improved on making less turn over, and overall we had more control on the court but they were a really good outside shooting team," said the Delenie Duran who has a good eye for detail. "Coming to Laguna and taking second place is a great victory... good job team," Coach Sal stated.

Over all, not coming back in first place didn't even phase our Orcutt lady Mustangs because they fought hard and played their best.
